Note: As the COVID-19 pandemic upends all of our lives, it is great to have something to look forward to in the future and help us keep some routine in our lives. Despite how it seems now, life will go on. Eventually. At this point, Ironman Canada in August 2020 is still on as scheduled. We have no way to know if this will stay the same but we can remain positive and hold on to hope. Maintaining training for this event may seem like some strange combo of pointless, impossible, and the only thing keeping you sane in these scary and trying times. Right now, it’s about doing what you can with what you can control and we are basing this blog on that.

Swim. Bike. Run. Check. Hopefully, you’ve been able to maintain some volume of training although swimming for most right now is a no-go with pools closed. This is the time to try dryland swim workouts and resistance band workouts to keep some muscle memory for swimming even if you don’t have any time in the water. Not to worry because with five months to go there is still time to get the swim back. Hopefully for many it will be warm enough to hit that open water soon.

Besides swim, bike and run what else can we focus on now and work on during these unusual times? What is a key aspect of training that supports all three of these sports and helps drive recovery? It’s the fourth sport that isn’t always acknowledged. Fueling!

Yep, working on your nutrition in all it’s many aspects is critical to a successful Ironman. It’s time to put on your detective hat to do some sleuthing about nutrition.

2020 Challenges / Preparing to Train

With the new year, I have been hearing everyone discussion about goals, resolutions and intentions. This is great! But, how do we really make that happen?

It is fun to dream about goals but many people forget that we have to start thinking about what we can do now to make them happen even if they seem a long ways away. Even big, big goals are achievable with enough time.

This is the time to be preparing to train. Preparing? That’s right. It might sound funny, but we need the foundation and basic skills to be able to take off and do the actual specific training for an event and to minimize the risk of injury along the way.

A Secret Weapon for Race Day

Do you have a race plan?

This is an often overlooked part of preparing for an event. It does not matter if it is a 5K, sprint triathlon or marathon. You have done all the hard work of finding the time to train, learning how to prepare for your event and now it is race day. As you head to the start line, you’ve done everything you can to be ready for this race. Right?

Not so fast! (See what we did there?)

So many athletes walk to the start line thinking that the hard work is done and they have made it. And yet, they have no plan for what they are actually going to do on race day. There are a lot of issues to consider here. Will you warm up? What pace will you start? Are you planning for a faster finish by starting out conservatively? What is a conservative pace?

These are all pertinent and important issues. But, beyond these questions, there is another aspect of race planning that many have never considered.

Whether you are set to race a 5k, olympic triathlon or marathon, what is the course profile and how can you use it to your advantage on race day?

Using the ups and downs of a race course can help you keep your effort level consistent giving you energy and an advantage as you head towards that finish line.

We train with the idea that race day will be this great and amazing day and why wouldn’t we? But, sometimes this is not the case. Sometimes it is our bodies that are not cooperating and sometimes our heads get in our own way. Sometimes things completely out of our control can become the stumbling blocks. This year the Boston Marathon proved that you can still have a great day even when conditions conspire against you.

CLA athlete Marcelo fills us in on his Boston Marathon experience. We love his can-do attitude and thoughtful approach to worst-case conditions!! We love the photos too!
