A huge congrats to Jeff B for his recent PR at IronMan Arizona (IMAZ) in November!

Jeff completed his first Ironman way back in 2000 and now, 17 years later, has a shiny new PR of 11:59:41! Jeff shares with us the challenges of his training and of race day and how he brought it all together!

As a coach, I am thrilled on every level for Jeff. He has a family, kids, a busy life, and a busy career filled with travel (he is a pilot!), yet we’ve managed to figure out what works for him to make it to the start line of goal races healthy and ready to go. Jeff shares with us the challenges of his training, of race day, and how he brought it all together this year at IMAZ!

Before you can even go from run to walk mode your mind has already processed half a dozen conversations with fellow runners, family members, coworkers, the mailman, and the very patient family dog on just how/why this happened.

Well, walk happens.

Hopefully over the next few months you will see strides, trails, hills and various forms of strength and play on your schedule. All of these will help boost your fitness to the next level come next spring and summer.

Strides is the first off season training tool we are going to talk about. Expect to see these on your schedule. There are different ways to do strides but we are defining them as 4 x 20 seconds of faster running that are added on towards the end of your scheduled easy run.

Strides are a great way to introduce speed work or speed play as we like to think about them. These are very short bursts where you run at a fast pace deliberately. But they are short enough to not be very taxing yet still provide neuromuscular benefits.
